Manuscripts take months, if not years, to herd through the system. Reviewers can be misinformed, rude, unfamiliar with your methodology, and more often than not, they are extremely demanding. At any point in the process, your hopes might be dashed because that same reviewer still cannot see your theoretical contribution! But reviews can be especially hard when the research is personally relevant-research that "addresses questions in which scholars are personally invested or involves a population to which they belong or in which they hold a personal interest" (Jones & Bartunek, 2021: 335). In this type of research, an author may feel threatened during the review process because their history, identity, and worldview are wrapped up in it. While personally relevant research may make the review process harder, having a personal stake in the research can also amplify new insights that arise from the to-and-fro of the review cycle. Though emotionally draining, those hard questions can prompt lively debate, drive authors to explore new territories, and bring about new understandings. 收起
