Burnout is the result of the extreme complexity that characterizes 21st-century society and therefore also the workplace. Burnout is an epidemic (Davis, 2021: 3) and further changes due to COVID-19 have increased the chances of it occurring. But can burnout be beaten and even prevented? Yes, it can, according to Davis (2021) in her book Beating Burnout at Work. Inviting us to consider a new and innovative approach using a systemic and holistic perspective, the author explains that burnout is a complex phenomenon (p. ⅹⅲ) corresponding to volatility and uncertainty in the workplace, and convincingly argues that burnout may be prevented and overcome by teams and their leaders, rather than by individual tools. It has been found that the synergy of teams (Deardorff & Williams, 2006) has a positive effect on burnout, and Davis's arguments are based on her personal experience of burnout as well as on the many testimonials, interviews, case studies, and data resulting from her work as a trainer and consultant on the issues of burnout and resilience. Consequently, the book is rich in empirical evidence as well as in academic references. Moreover, it is a commendable example for those who argue that the study and research of leadership and management in general must be real in practice (Dust & Gerhardt, 2020). While the main topic of the book is burnout at work and its prevention, teams and the leaders who guide them are shown to be hands-on practitioners who can act together using the many helpful tools and frameworks that Davis presents to us in a clear and precise way. 收起
