Although the attempt failed to det... 展开 There was a widespread response to the incident of 25 December 2009 when a person on board an aircraft scheduled to arrive in the United States ignited a device allegedly hidden in his underwear. Although the attempt failed to detonate the explosive device as intended, the act of destruction once again brought to bear the vulnerability of the aviation system to acts of unlawful interference and destruction. As this article shows, numerous different counter measures were taken, particularly by the United States, States of Western Europe and Australia to ensure that a person would not get another opportunity to hide explosives in his under garments in flight. One particular effective method identified in this regard was the use of full body scanners. The downside of this measure is the attendant problems of privacy it would portend as well as the cultural and religious nuances that the measure would present.
