The result of this experiment shows that, compared with native speakers, foreign learners of Chinese are quite sensitive to the sound-indicating function and its limitation of the pic-tophonetic characters, but they are still in lack of the ability of finer processing this category of characters. The contextual effect in the recognition of this kind of characters by foreign learners is quite weak, because what are stored in their mental lexicon are words, but not characters.
