Green communications is a challenging issue for communications and networking. In order to save energy, nodes of the wireless sensor networks (WSNs) usually adopt the low duty cycle mode which brings a large delay to the event detection and data transmission to the sink and deteriorates the network’s timely processing of the event. In this paper, bi-adjusting duty cycle schedule (BADCS) scheme is proposed to reduce event detection latency as well as data routing delay for low duty cycle wireless sensor networks. BADCS scheme consists mainly of two duty cycle adjustment algorithms: (a) active slot asynchronous adjustment algorithm for nodes in the same sensing area; (b) the continuous adjustment algorithm for two adjacent nodes on the routing path with one active slot interval. Specifically, the operations are 2-fold. First, perform asynchronous operations on the active slots of the nodes in the same sensing area, so that the active slots of the nodes in the same sensing area are distributed as evenly as possible without overlapping. In this way, it is possible to reduce the latency by the time the event is perceived after its occurrence. Secondly, active slots of the nodes on the routing path are adjusted to be with pipeline style, so that when the nodes receive the data packet, they can route through the continuous active slots, thus greatly reducing the delay of data routing. Two adjustment algorithms of active slot are given in detail in this paper. The performance of BADCS mode is discussed in detail, and its performance is better than the previous strategy. Comprehensive experiments are conducted, and the results demonstrate that the proposed BADCS scheme significantly improves event detection performance in terms of detection latency, detection probability, and routing delay. Detection delay and routing delay are reduced as high as 3.91% and 56.22% respectively.

Space-division multiple access (SDMA) utilizes linear precoding to separate users in the spatial domain and relies on fully treating any residual multi-user interference as noise. Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) uses linearly precoded superposition coding with successive interference cancellation (SIC) to superpose users in the power domain and relies on user grouping and ordering to enforce some users to fully decode and cancel interference created by other users.In this paper, we argue that to efficiently cope with the high throughput, heterogeneity of quality of service (QoS), and massive connectivity requirements of future multi-antenna wireless networks, multiple access design needs to depart from those two extreme interference management strategies, namely fully treat interference as noise (as in SDMA) and fully decode interference (as in NOMA).Considering a multiple-input single-output broadcast channel, we develop a novel multiple access framework, called rate-splitting multiple access (RSMA). RSMA is a more general and more powerful multiple access for downlink multi-antenna systems that contains SDMA and NOMA as special cases. RSMA relies on linearly precoded rate-splitting with SIC to decode part of the interference and treat the remaining part of the interference as noise. This capability of RSMA to partially decode interference and partially treat interference as noise enables to softly bridge the two extremes of fully decoding interference and treating interference as noise and provides room for rate and QoS enhancements and complexity reduction.The three multiple access schemes are compared, and extensive numerical results show that RSMA provides a smooth transition between SDMA and NOMA and outperforms them both in a wide range of network loads (underloaded and overloaded regimes) and user deployments (with a diversity of channel directions, channel strengths, and qualities of channel state information at the transmitter). Moreover, RSMA provides rate and QoS enhancements over NOMA at a lower computational complexity for the transmit scheduler and the receivers (number of SIC layers).

In this article, we investigate and compare the error performance of two-hop communication links (THCLs) with multiple relays, when distributed and cooperative relay processing schemes are respectively employed. Our main objectives include finding some general and relatively simple ways for estimating error performance and demonstrating the trade-off of using cooperative relay processing. One distributed relay processing and two cooperative relay processing schemes are compared. In the two cooperative relay processing schemes, one assumes the ideal relay cooperation, in which relays exchange information without consuming energy, while the other one assumes energy consumption for relay cooperation. In this paper, the error performance of the THCLs employing the considered relay processing schemes is investigated, when the channels from source to relays, the channels for information exchange and that from relays to destination experience various types of fading modeled by the Nakagami-m distributions. In order to derive the formulas for the bit error rate (BER) of the THCLs employing binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) modulation and various relay processing schemes, we introduce the Nakagami and Gamma approximation for finding the distribution functions of various variables encountered. Our studies show that the proposed approximation approaches are highly effective, which are capable of accurately predicting the BER of the THCLs supported by the different relay processing schemes.

In intelligent vehicular networks, vehicles have enhanced sensing capabilities and carry computing and communication platforms to enable new versatile systems known as Vehicular Communication (VC) systems. Vehicles communicate with other vehicles and with nearby fixed equipment to support different applications, including those which increase driver awareness of the surroundings. This should result in improved safety and may optimize traffic. However, VC systems are vulnerable to cyber attacks involving message manipulation. Research aimed at tackling this problem has resulted in the proposal of multiple authentication protocols. Several existing survey papers have attempted to classify some of these protocols based on a limited set of characteristics. However, to date there is no generic framework to support the comparison of these protocols and provide guidance for design and evaluation. Most existing classifications either use computation complexity of cryptographic techniques as a criterion, or they fail to make connections between different important aspects of authentication. This paper provides such a framework, proposing a new taxonomy to enable a consistent means of classifying authentication schemes based upon seven main criteria. The main contribution of this study is a framework to enable protocol designers and investigators to adequately compare and select authentication schemes when deciding on particular protocols to implement in an application. Our framework can be applied in design, making choices appropriate for the intended context in both intra-vehicle and inter-vehicle communications. We demonstrate the application of our framework using two different types of case study: individual analysis and hypothetical design. Additionally, this work makes several related contributions. We present the network model, outline the applications, list the communication patterns and the underlying standards, and discuss the necessity of using cryptography and key management in VC systems. We also review the threats, authentication, and privacy requirements in vehicular networks.

Internet of things (IoT) is a concept that is currently gaining a lot of popularity as a result of its potential to be incorporated into many heterogeneous systems. Because of its diversity, integrating IoT is conceivable in almost all fields, including the healthcare sector. For instance, a promising technology in the healthcare sector known as wireless body area network (WBAN) could be integrated with the IoT to enhance its productivity. However, in order to guarantee the optimization of the operation of the healthcare applications facilitated by the WBAN-enabled IoT technology, there must be enough support from all the different protocol stack layers so as to satisfy the critical quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of the WBAN systems. Consequently, the medium access control (MAC) protocol has recently been gaining lots of attention in the area of WBANs due to its ability to manage and coordinate when a shared communication channel can be accessed. For the purpose of achieving efficient MAC protocols for WBAN-enabled IoT technology, this paper investigates some key MAC protocols that could be exploited in WBANs based on their characteristics, service specifications, technical issues such as energy wastage issues, and possible technical solutions were provided to enhance energy efficiency, channel utilization, data transmission rate, and dealy rate. Also, these MAC protocols were grouped and compared based on short- and long-range communication standards. Following this, future directions and open research issues are pointed out.

Private networks will play a key role in 5G and beyond to enable smart factories with the required better deployment, operation and flexible usage of available resource and infrastructure. 5G private networks will offer a lean and agile solution to effectively deploy and operate services with stringent and heterogeneous constraints in terms of reliability, latency, re-configurability and re-deployment of resources as well as issues related to governance and ownership of 5G components, and elements. In this paper, we present a novel approach to operator models, specifically targeting 5G and beyond private networks. We apply the proposed operator models to different network architecture options and to a selection of relevant use cases offering mixed private–public network operator governance and ownership. Moreover, several key enabling technologies have been identified for 5G private networks. Before the deployment, stakeholders should consider spectrum allocation and on-site channel measurements in order to fully understand the propagation characteristic of a given environment and to set up end-to-end system parameters. During the deployment, a monitoring tools will support to validate the deployment and to make sure that the end-to-end system meet the target KPI. Finally, some optimization can be made individually for service placement, network slicing and orchestration or jointly at radio access, multi-access edge computing or core network level.
