The key role of the Business Gateway, an information service based in lowland Scotland and aimed at those who are setting up in business, those who are seeking to grow their business and companies planning to locate their businesses into the Scotland Enterprise area, is described. Particular attention is paid to the important role of Business Information Officers (BIOs) working within the Business Gateway in carrying out initial client assessments, directing clients to relevant support in a range of organizations and carrying out extensive business research. The typical range of enquiries handled by the Business Gateway and the resources available are illustrated by examples drawn from the Business Gateway North East Scotland. Describes the establishment of the Business Gateway in July 2003 as the access point for all businesses to publicly funded business support within the Scottish Enterprise area, as an extension of the Small Business Gateway Service, established in 2000. The Business Gateway now covers all businesses, not just start-ups and small businesses, and involves a partnership between all the main public bodies in the provision of support services to business, including: Scottish Enterprise Network; Scottish Development International; Scottish Executive and Local Authorities; and important subsidiary partner bodies. All BIOs are specially trained to diagnose client needs and perform a wide range of business information activities, including: advising clients on the range of services available through the Business Gateway and partner organizations; identifying relevant sources of help, such as the Euro Information Centre or the local Chamber of Commerce; searching for specific information using a range of resources; and assessing whether clients qualify for special services such as Business Investment for Growth. There is currently increased emphasis on the Referral Service, where clients are directed to support services available in their locality within a range of partner organizations.

As enterprises turning to SOA, services-oriented business ecosystem (SOBE) has become an important pattern for the organization and management of the massive business services. At the same time, the emergence of Internet of Services (IOS) provides a business model in which service vendors and consumers can interact with each other via the Internet. This paradigm makes it possible that the services in SOBE are managed in an autonomous and coordinated manner. The challenge here is to organize these massive business services, coordinate, and federate them to achieve the benefits of SOA. To address these challenges, this paper presents BSNet, a framework on the basis of the service correlation networks to manage the SOBE. The model consists of a who-what-how service correlation network that captures the various relations in SOBE. Finally, a prototype system is developed, and a simulated case study is provided to show the expanded value of our network-based framework.

Project supplier firms are solution providers. A solution may consist of a core project delivery with specific service contents, and/or of separate service deliveries. This paper analyzes the role of services in the business model of a project-based firm. The empirical study focuses on the business models of five project supplier firms, and on the relationship of the core project delivery and deliveries of different services to the business model. We identify six different 'impact types', each of which illustrates a different way in which services can affect the business of a project-based firm. The impact types are: customer entry, customer value, competitive advantage, delivery efficiency, service business, and innovation and learning. Our empirical study suggests a wealth of different service offerings and their complex relationships with the business model and revenue generation logic of a project supplier firm. We conclude with several distinctive findings that relate to how services are seen in the firms' businesses, with these approaches obviously serving as enablers or barriers to good business performance. The paper suggests further research on specific areas related to the overall theme of project and service business.

Purpose - The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not a dedicated business center within a public library acts as a key success factor in a public library's services to the community entrepreneur. Design/methodology/approach - A questionnaire survey was sent to 88 public libraries with dedicated business centers, and posted to BRASS-L and BUSLIB-L, for input from public libraries without business centers. Interviews with three survey respondents and one local city official followed. Findings - Fifty-seven per cent of all respondents felt that a dedicated business center is very essential or essential to the services provided to the entrepreneurial community. The services most often offered were workshops/seminars/classes, counseling sessions by collaborative agencies and one-on-one research sessions with librarians. The majority of responding libraries collaborated with a community business agency (80 per cent). Fifty-one per cent spend between 6 and 20 hours/month on the collaboration. Research limitations/implications - Since 2007, many of the dedicated business centers in public libraries have closed or been consolidated with other sections and services of a public library. This should be further studied. Further research on librarian expertise in market and industry research is recommended. Originality/value - This study updates the business services associated with public libraries business services since the push in the late 1990s for public libraries to be more active in community economic development.

This paper provides a critical analysis of European service research. The paper reviews the state of service research in 1991 and critically evaluates the subsequent two decades of academic research. The paper then identifies key research challenges that must be addressed over the next decade. The key issues identified include: the development of new conceptual frameworks; the creation of new metaphors that might supplant the dominance of the networking metaphor; research that would explore the production of translocal distributed co-produced service expertise; further work on embodied expertise/labour; research on services and manufacturing; modifications to national statistics and a critical analysis of the relationship between knowledge and business, and professional services.

An agile enterprise rapidly adapts to changing business requirements by adapting or conceiving business processes (BPs) in response to normal or disruptive business events (BEs). This paper stresses out the role of service-orientation, service-oriented architecture (SOA), and web services along with the principles of abstraction, separation of concerns, and specialisation in modelling and implementing BPs. A BP is treated as a dynamic abstraction that specifies a state reflecting the control flow and data flow. This abstraction consists of a set of specialised services having separated concerns, namely controller service, and worker services. Shared, discoverable, reusable enterprise assets known as business objects (BOs) realise the latter. BOs encapsulate activities and data; and play the role of service units. Changes in the BP in terms of business functions and rules are solely reflected in the state, the controller service adapts to the state changes, which allows a dynamic composition of software solutions supporting changing BPs

In recent years, industrial manufacturers around the world have deployed growing efforts in developing services in addition to their traditional product business in order to secure long-term growth and to remain competitive in the marketplace. Against this background, the present article introduces the reader to this special issue. It first recalls key aspects of the emerging service-dominant logic of marketing and examines how it relates to the business marketing field. It then illustrates the challenges faced by top executives of industrial companies in the transition from a product-centric to a service-centric business perspective through an interview with the managing director of ThyssenKrupp Service AG. After discussing how the articles included in this special issue advance the extant literature on industrial services marketing, the article finally develops a number of directions for future research on services in business markets.

Many businesses today recognize the increased significance of service and the transition toward service orientation. Nonetheless, organizational practitioners frequently encounter problems managing this shift and seizing service-related business opportunities. This practical relevance, together with many still-unanswered service research questions, has inspired the preparation of this special section that advances the extant literatures on business services. We finish by providing a research agenda. First, more research is needed on the buyer perspective. Second, researchers need to keep in mind financial issues related to business services. Third, more researchers could tap into management, leadership, and decision-making in business service companies. Finally, sustainability, social responsibility, and environmental considerations are important topics for further exploration. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

With the continuous application of service-oriented thought in business, plenty of businesses are encapsulated into business services, thereby being published, integrated and applied. Their evolution and interaction behaviours form business service ecosystem (BSE). In this environment, service providers adopt different business strategies, such as promotion alliance and industry association, thereby forming relationships of cooperation and competition, which have a significant influence on services selection. However, most current related works consider business services to be static and independent, and some works consider correlation but without classification and analysis of correlation types, which is very important to investigate their different influences. In this research, first, a business correlation framework (BCF) is proposed to formally classify and describe business correlations. Then, a business service correlation model (BSCM) is established to model actual BSE, supporting correlation modelling. Next, a correlation-aware services selection model (CaSSM) is investigated. Finally, a case study of marine logistic service indicates the effectiveness of BCF and BSCM, and the selection result shows that a higher quality of service and performance can be achieved by CaSSM.
